Statue Narrative
I am Constantin Daicoviciu—archaeologist, historian, and a man who spent his life digging through time to uncover the soul of a people. Born in 1898 in Transylvania, I came of age in a world still shaking off empires and discovering its identity. I chose to seek that identity not in politics, but in the stones, walls, and secrets buried beneath our feet.
My passion was Dacia—the ancient civilization that once stood proudly where Romania now lies. At Sarmizegetusa, among crumbling ruins and whispering winds, I found traces of a culture too often forgotten. I studied their fortresses, their tools, their legacy—and through them, I reconnected Romanians with their deep past.
As a professor at the University of Cluj and later as head of the Romanian Academy, I trained generations of scholars to ask questions, dig deeper, and never settle for surface truths. Yes, I held public office too, but my real work was always with history—making sure it lived and breathed in the present.
You’ll find my statue in Cluj’s Piața Muzeului, but my true monument lies beneath your feet: in the ruins of Dacia, in the minds of students, and in every Romanian who dares to ask, “Where do we come from?”
